WEEK THREE - POST ONE

  • Island of knowledge metaphor
  • https://www.brainpickings.org/2015/02/02/the-island-of-knowledge-marcelo-gleiser/
  • The idea that our island consists of everything that we know regarding science, the shores being the limits of our knowledge, while the ocean is all that is unknown
  • The island expands as our knowledge grows
  • Some spots within the "ocean" contain unknowable knowledge; knowledge that is impossible to find out
  • As the island grows, so do the shores of question; new tools may answer old questions, yet bring even more questions with them
  • The light that was produced from the big bang is 13.8 billions years old
  • The distance light has traveled from the big bang is about 46 billion light years.
  • The bounds of the universe are finite, yet static. Constantly expanding outward
  • There are an unfathomable amount of other galaxies in our universe
  • Each galaxy is very far apart from the next
  • The closest galaxy to ours; the Milky Way, is The Andromeda galaxy
  •  The distance is 2.537 light years away

    1. The island represents our current knowledge, as the shores represent our limit of knowledge. The ocean is everything that is unknown to us.
